Through The Lens of Time: My Journey With Abstract Photography
As I sit down to reminisce about my creative journey, I am transported back to the day my parents gifted me my first camera, igniting a passion that would shape the course of my artistic endeavours. Photography was my first love, and it all started with the subtle influence of my father, who always had his camera in hand, capturing moments that would become cherished memories.
Before abstract painting became a prominent chapter in my creative story, photography was my primary medium of expression. I vividly recall the moments spent watching my father meticulously frame shots, adjusting settings, and capturing the essence of a scene with a click of the shutter. His love for photography was contagious, and it wasn't long before I found myself wielding my own camera, eager to explore the world through my lens.
From the tender age of seven, I found solace and joy in freezing moments in time. Every click was a step closer to understanding the art of storytelling through images. Photography became a language that allowed me to communicate my thoughts, emotions, and observations with the world.
As the years passed, my camera became an inseparable companion. I explored various genres, from capturing the raw beauty of nature to creating intimate portraits of those around me.
The transition from photography to abstract painting was a gradual shift, marked by a desire to delve deeper into the world of artistic expression. Photography had taught me to observe, but abstract painting allowed me to transcend the limitations of reality. It started with a fascination for colours and textures, an exploration of the unseen and the intangible.
Before abstract painting took centre stage, I found myself experimenting with abstract photography. The camera became a tool for pushing the boundaries of composition, capturing the world in a way that transcended traditional storytelling. It was during this phase that I discovered the power of abstraction – a visual language that spoke volumes without the need for a literal narrative.
A pivotal moment in my creative journey occurred when I delved into a series of abstract photographs inspired by the captivating interplay of reflections in natural landscapes and urban cityscapes.
Abstract painting became a natural progression, a continuation of the visual storytelling I had honed through photography. The transition was seamless, as the skills and perspectives gained from years behind the camera informed my approach to the canvas. Each stroke became a counterpart to the click of the shutter, a way to convey emotions, thoughts, and dreams in a different visual language.
As I look back on my journey – from the early days to the evolution from photography to abstract painting – I see a seamless thread connecting these chapters of creativity. Photography was my first passion, a love passed down through generations, and it laid the foundation for a broader exploration of the artistic landscape.
In the dance between the concrete and the abstract, between the click of the shutter and the stroke of the brush, I find a sense of continuity and self-discovery. The lens of my camera and the canvas of abstract painting are intertwined, each capturing a unique facet of my artistic journey, each contributing to the ongoing exploration of the limitless possibilities that unfold through the language of visual expression. And now, the nest generation has already joined the club of passionate apprentice photographers, and I hope they will find their own way to express their creativity.
